Microtechnology industry expects little skilled labor from refugee influx

Refugees who come to Germany should be able to take up employment faster, say representatives of the microtechnology industry according to a brief survey of the IVAM Microtechnology Network. However, only one-third of the surveyed industry experts see heightened chances of winning professionals for their own industry through the strong current refugee influx. A factor of uncertainty is the initially unclear residence status of refugees. This stands in contrast to the high specialization of microtechnology companies, which usually requires long and expensive training.

IVAM Microtechnology Network arranges a cooperation with the Federal University of Paraíba, João Pessoa, Brazil

During a workshop about the use of microreactors in chemical development and production, which has taken place at the end of May in João Pessoa, Brazil, IVAM Microtechnology Network and the University of Mainz each arranged a ‘General Academic, Cultural and Scientific Cooperation Agreement’ with the Brazilian Federal University of Paraíba in João Pessoa. This agreement is aimed to build the foundation for corporate projects between research facilities and companies in Brazil and Germany.

Bärbel Schilling from Plan Optik AG from Elsoff, Germany has become new member of the board of IVAM Microtechnology Network.  The longtime chairman Dr. Frank Bartels has retreated from the board and been elected honorary president. Dr. Lutz Aschke succeeds Dr. Frank Bartels as chairman of the board.

Microtechnology industry more eager to invest

The European microtechnology industry has recently been more eager to invest than in previous years. In the annual economic data survey, which the IVAM Microtechnology Network has conducted in February 2015, almost a third of the participating companies stated that they have invested more in 2014 than in the year before. This is a higher percentage than in the past years and also, it seems, above the European average.

The proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the European Union and the US is causing mixed feelings in the European microtechnology industry. The companies appreciate the potential benefits of the free trade agreement, but they rather disapprove of it in its considered design.
