The past pandemic has shown that smart lab on a chip solutions are stronger in need than ever, for infectious disease control, but also for routine diagnostics that require quick responses or automation of demanding sample preparation workflows. Start-ups and established companies often face the challenge to transform their product idea into initial prototypes and industrial series production with limited resources in terms of time, capacities and decentralized development processes.

Microfluidics got very popular within the last decade and is utilized for a vast number of biological, medical, biophysical, biochemical or pharmaceutical applications. In this field the term “microreactor” is increasingly encountered. What is a microreactor, what is it good for? For instance, when talking about synthesis of nanomaterials, it can refer to the whole microfluidic device, that is the microfluidic chip.

Microtechnology is one key enabler to get a grip of the Corona crisis: It enables medical devices to be more smart and compact and is qualified to make diagnostic methods better, more precise and much faster as before. Furthermore it opens up the possibility of transforming existing processes, components and systems at lightning speed so that completely new fields of application can be created in the fight against the virus.

Microfluidics plays an increasingly important role in industry and in applications for everyday life. The medical technology and healthcare markets are particularly in focus. Mobile diagnostic and therapeutic devices are not possible without microfluidic components that process small amounts of liquids. At COMPAMED 2019, microfluidics is is again a special trend topic in our joint area as well as at the experts forum.

Wir haben mit den fünf IVAM-Vorstandsmitgliedern in kurzen Interviews über Schlüsseltechnologien, Technologietrends und die Relevanz von Netzwerken gesprochen. Bärbel Schilling von der Plan Optik AG aus Elsoff ist seit März 2015 Mitglied im IVAM-Vorstand.
