During a workshop about the use of microreactors in chemical development and production, which has taken place at the end of May in João Pessoa, Brazil, IVAM Microtechnology Network and the University of Mainz each arranged a ‘General Academic, Cultural and Scientific Cooperation Agreement’ with the Brazilian Federal University of Paraíba in João Pessoa. This agreement is aimed to build the foundation for corporate projects between research facilities and companies in Brazil and Germany.

The first common activity is the organization of a web conference, where German manufacturers of micro components and equipment are given the opportunity to present their products and services to Brazilian partners, who in turn can point out their requirements. Furthermore, it has been agreed upon that the workshop should be the kick-off to a series of events where new developments in the area of microfluidics in South America will be presented. The next workshop is going to take place in July 2017 in Rio de Janeiro.

During the last workshop Professor Löwe from the University of Mainz presented new scientific possibilities for the use of microreactors in chemical development and production. Dr. Thomas R. Dietrich, CEO of IVAM, informed the audience about the activities of some of IVAM’s European members, like e.g. HNP Mikrosysteme, Invenios or Little Things Factory. These companies already produce essential components and plants for the use of microfluidics in the fields of biotechnology and chemistry. Dr. Sebastian Härtner von Merck was able to shine a light on the advantages of this new technology in the production of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Brazilian presentations were ranging from topics like the simulations of characteristics of reactors (Federal University of Paraíba) to the use of microfluidics in biotechnology (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro).

At the last day of the workshop the participants visited the research institute CTGAS-ER in Natal which, amongst others things, conducts research for PETROBRAS – one of the biggest oil companies worldwide. Here, the visitors were able to inspect and test a micro procedural plant by Invenios Europe.

Based on the success of this year’s workshop in João Pessoa, IVAM Microtechnology Network expects good scientific and economic contacts between European and Brazilian companies and institutes.
