Piezoresistive sensors have a wide range of applications ranging from accelerometers to pressure and flow rate sensors. As the Internet of Things is gaining momentum, a new family of piezoresistive sensors is being developed for smart textiles and biomechanical monitoring. While the current piezoresistive sensors, available at the commercial level, are cheap to fabricate mainly due to standardized materials and technologies, they suffer from lack of flexibility, mechanical fragility, and low recyclability.

To tackle some of these new challenges, IMT Bucharest, along with a consortium of Universities and National Research Institutes, is implementing the Nanostructured Carbon Based Materials for Advanced Industrial Applications (NANOCARBON+) project aiming at the development of new carbon based piezoresistive materials, so addressing a new generation of technologies which require environmentally friendly products and increased connectivity. To achieve this goal, the team is studying and developing thin films of nanocrystalline graphene and graphene aerogels to address the strain gauges, as well as the pressure sensing market segments. The new sensors are predicted to have superior gauge factors and mechanical flexibility, at the same time being an eco-friendly alternative to the market. These new materials can open new opportunities for pressure sensing applications, addressing the special needs of emerging applications.
