In the future, intelligent factories will play a decisive role in the way production and work is performed in Germany. Protective helmets with integrated microdisplays or combined data glasses will soon monitor production lines, inform workers about dangers or show storage locations.

The scientists at Fraunhofer FEP in Dresden are specialized in the development of special microdisplays for AR and VR data glasses, which can be used in industry 4.0, medicine, automotive or leisure. The microdisplays are based on OLED-on-silicon technology. In contrast to other display types, no additional lighting is required for OLED microdisplays, because they are self-luminous. They enable simplified optics and significantly higher contrast ratios. In addition, a camera function can be integrated directly into the display, enabling control with eyes.

The respective display concept and parameters such as resolution, pixel size and additional functions can be varied and combined depending on the application, e.g. for condition monitoring, in logistics or production. The bandwidth ranges from high-resolution microdisplays in extended-full-HD for AR/VR to ultra-low-power variants for wearables. Evaluation kits are available as development tools.
